How stupid is this?

I had a Windows XP system with 30GB used, about 40 unused and unpartitioned.

I went to install Ubuntu 9 onto it, and took the default for partitioning which said "Install ubuntu side-by-side with Windows".

It INCREASED the windows partition size to fill almost the entire hard drive, then installed itself in a little 4GB sliver at the end of the drive, making it a nearly useless installation that was so small that the automatic updates that popped up right after boot didn't have room to install.

This seems like a weird choice for a default dual boot setup.
