Linux test continues...
24+ hours. That's longer than I've ever used Linux on the desktop before.
So far, I haven't found anything that I do in Windows that I can't do in Linux pretty easily.
I haven't tried a lot of Windows software under WINE, but everything I've tried works.
Windows software I have running (all worked without a significant problem immediately)
Pegasus TMPGEnc MPEG Editor 2.0 - one minor display glitch, and overlay isn't working so display is a tad slow.
GrabIt usenet binary downloader
QuickPAR parity checking software (I later realized that there's a native version)
Password Safe - the website recommends several equivalent linux projects, but I found the Windows version runs beautifully under WINE.
Stuff I had to manually get and compile:
Cisco VPN client to connect to work's network
TrueCrypt
Stuff I just had to run apt-get to install:
gpar2 parity checking software
various dev libraries, smbfs, samba, lots of little things to get compiles to work, easily figured out.
Stuff that was just already there:
built-in tsclient for remote desktop access to my WinXP box - this seems to work actually a little better than Microsoft's client, if anything.
Media players and codecs-so far everything I've clicked on, it's just gone out and found/installed a working codec for it.
Yet to do:
Zen MP3 player sync/manage
Palm sync
Flatbed and film scanners need to get working under SANE
I need to get refamiliarized with Gimp.
I haven't tried bittorrent yet, but I'm sure that will work fine
Eventually if I decide this is permanent, a bunch of data needs to get transitioned - that will probably involve the purchase of a sizable hard drive (500GB or so)

Seems to download what it believes to be the appropriate codecs, just doesn't work.
