Moby Dick by Herman Melville
Acquired from Librivox (free recording), narration by Stewart Wills. This is an EXCELLENT recording, the narrator is quite good. I couldn't hope for a better recording from any of the commercial recording houses I've listened to audiobooks from.
Anyway, this is an amazing book, certainly the richest I've read. I'm a bit sorry I didn't get to it years before; it has certainly expanded my expectations for novels.
I went out and read the Wikipedia article on the book after finishing it. It's a good wrap-up, and hints at the allegory and symbolism of the book without bashing you over the head with it.
