Rargh. Earlier this week, I came up with the theory that I could be running my Linux box under Virtual PC, since it doesn't need 2.5 GHz and 512M RAM very much, so it can share them with my Windows 2000 box.

Anyway, I decided to try mounting the drive directly in the 2k box and giving the VPC session direct access. I now believe that I must have bumped the drive a bit when moving it, because by the time I was done (and the drive back in the original box) it was exhibiting hardware problems. This is a 250GB drive.

So, I spent all day Saturday madly sorting stuff, burning DVDs, etc, and managed to get the 235 GB of data down to about 85, which was managable to back up to a spare drive. It turns out that the WD utility repaired the hardware problem OK, the drive was still bootable, and the filesystem fsck'd and cleaned up fine (reiser FS).

I'm still not sure if I want to try moving to Virtual PC. I am sure it'll work, I just don't know if I want to leave the W2K box running 24/7. It'd be about 12 to 20 hours less running of a box per day, but it's nice being able to mess with this machine and just let the linux box run in the basement. So though it's an interesting idea, at this point I think I'll just leave things as they are.

Hmm, I see Nashbar has an end-of-season sale on panniers - I could use more space on the bike, it gets really cramped on the way home when I had to wear warmer clothes in the morning, and it'd be nice to be able to pick up groceries or whatever.
