The Nashbar (Cheng Shin) tire I put on in May of 2014 is about shot - cord visible in 8 places, up from 3 a week ago.
So it lasted one year and 1350 miles. Not bad for a $12 tire I guess, and I have 3 more of them. When they're gone, I think I might look for a longer lasting tire. The Marathons I bought for $24 a few years ago lasted about 7000 miles, but then again, those were 32s not 23s. Still, probably better value for money.

My front tire was leaking down this week. I got it off and patched it, I don't think it was a puncture, the tube looked like it had been pinched or abraded in a line.

Also my chain had gotten quite loose and was badly corroded and sticky. I put it in a mineral spirits wash for a couple of hours, shaking it by hand while watching TV. Then I put some prolink on it, but I don't like prolink for winter riding, it's too thin and dry. I went to the bike shop in town today to look for some wet lube but they didn't have anything I liked - the wrench there wanted to push Boeshield T9, but I already have some and really don't think it's very good.

I wound up coming home and cutting some chainsaw bar oil with a little mineral spirits to make it flow. That should be sticky enough. Really in the winter it would be best if I cleaned the chain a lot more. I don't like doing it but I should try to do it.

Then I had to adjust the bottom bracket to tension the chain. This is a little bit of a pain in the butt - I haven't found a pin spanner that does a good job so I just put a crappy allen wrench in a hole and tap on it with a screwdriver and a 2 pound sledge to rotate it.

I'm not happy with the weather forecast for Sunday/Monday. If there's 10 inches of snow, I'll probably wave off riding on Monday, and I already skipped Friday due to the flat tire and the chain issues.

Yeah, low mileage for a bike I've had for over a year. I don't ride this bike unless I have to (Giant Seek 0 2014)

Mileage

Apparently I rolled the road bike over 3K. Probably just before leaving on vacation last week. I haven't been paying much attention.

I broke the spoke in position 32 last night. Only one factory spoke left on the rear drive side/trailing positions.

Previously 20, 24, 28, 8, 12, 4 have broken.

Odometer: 789 miles - yes, the miles are going on very slowly this winter. I've succumbed to saying "screw it, I'm driving" just because it's -10*F out a lot this winter.
johnridley: (me2)
Yesterday's broken spoke, the sixth so far, was #4. Only two factory spokes in that category remain, at this point it's just a matter of time, but I'll wait for them to break in their own time so that I can say that they all broke on their own.

previously: 20, 24, 28, 8, 12 have broken

Odometer: 519 (didn't ride much at all in the heavy snows and very low temps)
johnridley: (Calvin vs bike)
This week's broken spoke is spoke #20, another drive side/trailing edge spoke. Only three more to go before all the stock spokes in that position have snapped. None of the replacements (Wheelsmith) have broken. The first break was at 163 miles, the second at 270, so both of those replacements have more miles on them than the first one when it broke. If I reach 1000 miles without breaking any replacements, I'll put it down to just garbage spokes. If any of the replacements break, I'll tear the wheel down and relace it with new spokes.

This one broke on Thursday on my way to work. They make a significant PING when they break. With the disc brakes I can just let them slide until the weekend when I can work on them in daylight.

previously: 24, 28, 8, 12 have broken

Odometer: 475 miles

The water sticking to the ground this evening is already somewhat crunchy and the forecast is for 28*F by morning, so the studded tires went on the new bike this evening.

And in the process, I found that there's already a broken spoke, at 163 miles. That's poor even for a crap bike, I expected more from a $1100 bike. I guess I'll retension the spokes after I replace that one. I may have trouble finding a replacement locally, it's a 266mm spoke, quite short due to the IG hub. So I went on Amazon and ordered a 50 pack of black Wheelsmith spokes from AE Bike, since I bet I'm going to break more of them.

Flat tire

Another flat tire today on the road bike, this time in front. Another bad patch, but this one was because I put a patch on top of a patch while trying to fix the last bad patch. I knew at the time that it was probably going to fail.

I've thrown out that tube.

Yes, I'm getting a LOT of flat tires. Turns out that high pressure tires are really susceptible to problems.

Had a flat tire (rear), was a bad patch - one of the old square ones done with bad technique. Replaced patch. Rear tire center is clearly worn flat but still lots of miles (it has 1000 miles on it now).

Reconfigured - moved handlebar bag to seat post on a ToPeak T bar to free up bar space for headlight in a normal position.

Chain cleaned and re-lubed with Chain-L lube (new lube). VERY quiet running, supposed to be an excellent lube. Really thick. Chain still does not register as even 0.75 wear on the chain gauge.

The hybrid is hanging in the garage and the battery in the comp might run out while it's hanging there, so I'm just checking this in:

(both in miles)

I ordered some "Chain-L" lube from Amazon, it's getting good reviews. It's going to be a while before it gets here, because the vendor, "The Triathlete Store" lied about shipping. They claim to have shipped it on Aug 1, but it didn't hit the post office in California until a week later on the 8th. I'd been holding off on chain maintenance hoping it would get here but today I finally cleaned the chain and put on some Boeshield T9. It took quite a while to get the chain clean.

First big round number on the new road bike. I ride significantly more miles per day on this bike, though I spend the same or a bit less time on it. I can do 14 miles on this bike in about the same time I do 10.5 on the other one. Partially due to it being more efficient, partly that I'm having more fun so I work harder at it.

Tire issue

My new road bike came with Michelin Dynamic Sport tires. Clearly they use these because they're the cheapest things they can get; they're basically just a paper thin skin over the tube. Fair enough, since everyone has their own favorite tire, there's no point in putting $80 tires on a new bike. I decided to see how long they would last.

Today the rear died. I was highly suspicious of it yesterday and intended to swap it out but I got involved with a car repair. Today on the way home I braked hard at one point, scuffed the rear, and within a mile I was getting "thump thump thump" - the tire had begun to bulge where the scuff happened. I let some air out of the tire and the bump bump bump mostly went away and I made it about 6 more miles, but then about a mile short of home due to the lower pressure I got a snake bite flat. I just walked it home from there.

So FWIW, a Michelin Dynamic Sport 700cX23 inflated to 110 PSI carrying a 180 pound dude lasts about 830 miles on the rear. The one on the front is barely worn. I swapped it out and put on two new tires anyway, I'll keep the front Michelin as a spare. The new ones are Nashbar Prima 2s made by Cheng Shin. They're on sale for about $12 right now, I should probably grab a couple more.

I'll take some 60 degree weather now. kthx.

Weighs 24 pounds with pedals, bottle cages, pump, seat wedge and spare tube. Haven't added the kickstand yet, it's not here ;)

I guess I rolled over 29,000 miles on the way back from work on Monday. I have not been riding much this winter, maybe 2 days a week but I'm determined to ramp up to 3 then back to 5 soon. After a couple of months with little riding the legs really don't want to ride every day all at once. It does feel great though.
The Planet Bike comp is working again after giving it a few days to dry out and giving it a new battery.

Should have put them on last night, but the forecast didn't look quite that bad and I didn't get home from the concert until 9:15 or so.

Tire swap

The Bontrager Race Lite 32 that I had on the back is showing cord through the rubber. I have no idea how many miles it has on it. It was on the front when I bought the pair. When the rear went, I replaced them both with Marathons and hung the one in the front up. When the rear Marathon died I put the Race Lite on the back. I really have given up on keeping track of mileage on tires but it has been quite a few miles on this tire, probably something like 10K all told.

The Marathon that was on the front is now on the back. I expect it to last until fall of 2013. The front now has a new Pacela Panaracer 32 that I bought on clearance for $12 about 3 years ago and has been in the basement.

My bike computer reset itself. Some investigation revealed that one of the battery contacts wasn't pressing against the battery very hard so if the battery shifted a bit it reset.
I bent the contact and it seems solid now.
I had to guess at the odometer. I remember seeing it at about 277xx and that was a few days ago so I set it to 27800.
johnridley: (Default)
New pads in the rear. Last set went on at 19562 back in late 2009, so these lasted 8099 miles and close to 3 years (wow, my annual mileage is down). This is more miles than I've gotten out of them in the past, but I have been using the front brakes more heavily recently.

The rim is getting a noticeable groove worn in it by the brakes, due to the amount of grit that I pick up while riding gravel roads. I've been trying to avoid the gravel both on the bike and in the car lately, it's clearly bad for both; rocks hitting the underside of the car clearly lead to premature rusting from the looks of the bottom of the van. Anyway I should probably start looking for deals on a new rim, I'll have to lace up one probably next year if not sooner.

Guess I rolled 27K on Wednesday evening. Didn't notice until Thursday morning, didn't get around to posting until today.
