I lowered my goal to 30 books this year since I want to accomplish other things. As of September I'm past that goal, but I'm no longer reading to reach a goal, but rather for pleasure, which I think is the point anyway.

Oh heck I almost put the book I just finished in Jan-June. Oddly enough I managed exactly 50 books, 25 text and 25 audio, in the first half of the year. I'd set my challenge to 70 books, which would be a record for me. I doubt I'll be able to maintain the pace in the 2nd half of the year but it's a goal.

    January-June is here

Shadow of Victory by David Weber

    ★★★☆☆

Meh. Sure wish this was better, I'd hoped that after a little while off of new books in the series a worthy addition was in the works, but this was pretty mediocre. Nearly 2 stars really, I guess I nudged to 3 just out of general love of the old series. I'm probably done with this series, these books are too long to waste time on them if they're not going to be any good.

    Empire Games by Charles Stross

    ★★★★★

Excellent restart/continuation of the Merchant Princes series. It has a lot of new places to go now.
I was amused by the afterword. He nailed the writing style, or maybe Bruce actually had a hand in writing that bit.

It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis

    ★★★★☆

Five stars for insight into how easily fascism can take hold in a democracy. 3 for writing (this is a bit hackneyed). Overall very worthwhile. As the afterward indicates though, this piece is not terribly original in its time. Some of the passages are insightful and some in 2017 a bit worrying.

I think probably more people in 2017 believe that fascism is possible in the US than did in the 30s when this was written.

"Every man is a king so long as he has someone to look down on."

"it becomes clear that the installation of a fascist government will not be a revolution or a coup d'etat; rather, the groundwork for fascism has already been constructed in the ideological worldviews of the majority of Americans."

    Shadowed Souls

    ★★★★☆

I love a good collection of short stories. Very enjoyable, from some favorite authors and one or two I hadn't read before.

    Brass Man by Neal Asher

    ★★☆☆☆

It was...kind of interesting, in a few places, I guess?

Zero new ground, sort of mediocre characters. Most telling, I was looking forward to finish it not because I wanted to know what happened, but because I wanted it to be over. Also, possibly the most mediocre ending of a novel ever. There were quite a few simultaneous stories going on, and the author managed to make all of them just sort of peter out to lackluster, semi-resolved ends. OK, full points for realism but very unsatisfying.

The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age of American Innovation by Jon Gertner

    ★★★★★

A fascinating book about the singular research laboratory that pretty much created the world we live in today. That's a hell of a claim, but it's hard to deny.
    johnridley: (Bookworm 2)
I started 2016 making a special push to get more books read that year, and especially to try to get into more genres and more non-fiction. I'm pretty pleased with the results. At the end of the year I had 69 books finished (27,500 pages), which is more than any year other than 2008. In 2008 I was happily consuming Discworld, Honor Harrington and The Serrano Legacy series on audiobook while bicycle commuting, so that alone is a huge volume.

Now that I'm doing the wrap-up, I see that the book count is somewhat inflated because Goodreads is counting the short stories as well. I didn't count them below. So perhaps 65 is a more accurate count, or perhaps 65.5.

Meanwhile, every time I finish a book and skip back to the main page on the Kindle to see what to read next, I'm faced with a hard choice. I already have a dozen books that I want to read next, and more that would be in the same boat but I haven't loaded them yet. I guess it's a good problem to have.

BTW I'd be happy to have more Goodreads friends. This is me on Goodreads

Babylon's Ashes by James S.A. Corey

    ★★★★★

Review Fantastic wrap up to the series (or at least, this part of it). Plenty of action, the same sort of escape from certain doom that you must be fond of by now or you wouldn't still be reading, unexpected turns, etc. There are still only 2 or 3 characters that I actually care about, but they're good enough that it's enough. Bobbie in particular is very present in this series, and is possibly the best character here.
If they get to this book in the SyFy series and can pull it off, it will be absolutely amazing to see some of the battles that are depicted in this book.

Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow

    ★★★★★

Likely to be the most well researched in its breadth Washington bio you'll ever read. This book gives a life and depth to Washington, much more realistic than the stroppy legends that are taught to kids (do they still teach those tales?) Very enjoyable, though it took me close to two months to get through. This is not to say it was difficult going, but it is a bit long and my time has been short.

    Spin by Robert Charles Wilson

    ★★★★★

That was very interesting. Totally novel concept AFAIK, very unexpected things happened, a great story about people, and the resolution near the end came out of left field. Just the sort of thing I like.

A bit slow finishing this one, too much life in the way of reading.

    Death's End by Cixin Liu

    ★★★☆☆

I actually finished this a couple of days ago and waited to let my thoughts about it settle for a bit.

The first book was a bit of a slow start, but then got interesting to me. I enjoyed the second. This one started out much the same, but about halfway through it just started to get bizarre, and it just went downhill from there.

It's very imaginative, but it's really more like a bunch of junk the author thought up hammered together and strung together on a few characters which are hopped forward in time in order to provide some cohesion.

Three stars is still "I liked it" but I really can't say I "really liked it."

    Mechanical Failure by Joe Zieja

    ★★★☆☆

Not bad. The world needs more funny science fiction, and this is that. It has good characters and a fairly good plot line, and is fairly silly. If that's what you're looking for, this will do it.

Very good premise for a book, fast pacing, never predictable.

    Powersat by Ben Bova

    ★★★☆☆

I decided to pick up the strays on The Grand Tour. This is definitely not the best book in the series, but it's not bad. Good characters/motivations. I called the end completely incorrectly, so that's always a bonus.
