Workouts

I bought a membership in the local wellness center back in November and for the most part have been good about going M/W/F. But on the 11th I went in and had apparently a cramping lat on my right side; I cut my normal 3.5K run to about 1.8 and got one rep of one exercise in before deciding this wasn't happening.

I went back in this morning and all was well. The shoulder still speaks up during some things but it's much better. It does come and go but even its worst now is better than its best a month ago so I'm confident that by spring it should be fine. Mostly I go through the day without feeling it at all unless I hit an impingement point and even that isn't the level of pain it was before.

Flu shot acquired.

I went to the oral surgeon for a follow-up yesterday, to find out why my jaw still hurts so much.
Removing his euphemisms, it's because I'm old. They're big holes in my jaw and a nearly-50-year-old can't expect them to heal that fast, they're gonna take a few more weeks to stop hurting and a few months to actually fill in, and I shouldn't ask people who had their wisdom teeth out when they were 20 what their experiences were.

And he gave me the go-ahead to continue popping ibuprofen, which is the only thing that seems to really help. I think I'm gonna start using the remaining narcotic painkillers before bed though, I'm getting sick of waking up at 3AM, taking more stuff, and lying there for 45 minutes until the throbbing goes away. He suggested upping to 600mg before bed but that was only marginally successful last night - I still woke up but I was able to get back to sleep.

As odd as it sounds, exercise has an IMMEDIATE effect on my blood pressure. Last time I rode before today was last Wednesday. Between then and last night, my BP rose 2 or 3 points a day on a pretty much steady climb, winding up at 135/89 last night (with meds). Today a few hours after getting home I was at 128/77. Next time I ride will be Wednesday (I'm doing 3x per week until I can take these FSM-forsaken studded tires off), by tomorrow night I'll be up to around 84 diastolic. It's that predictable.

My resting pulse rate is not what I'd like, but it never has been. It actually increases with lower blood pressure. Last night it was 61 which is by far the lowest I've seen it for years, I don't know why. Today it's 93 again, which isn't that unusual, though about 80 is typical, even when I was riding daily for several years in a row.

After 3 months of little exercise, my blood pressure is up into the "that's not good" zone WITH meds.

I'll be going to the doctor in a few days, and I could get more intense meds or higher doses, but I'd prefer to get back on regular exercise.

So as of tomorrow, I'm back on the bike, or on days when I can't due to weather, on one of the machines at work. Given my family history, it's not really an option; the only way my mother ever controlled her BP without serious meds was with 1 to 2 hours a day of exercise, at least vigorous walking.

Even with the meds, my BP had crept up to borderline again. Riding the bike today was a bit of an experiment in this regard as well.

My BP right now is 115/76, lower than it's been in 2 weeks.

No Ishercon for me. I've had a sore throat since Sunday, it's not getting either better or worse. Since I don't know what it is, I'm going to stay away from the party.

I'm pretty bummed, because I've been invited for several years now and this was to be my first time to go. And I had a number of things that I was looking forward to talking to several people about.

Next year, I hope. Have fun without me!

My blood pressure has been borderline for several years, even with 90 minutes of cardio a day. Since stopping the daily bike rides back in October, I got a home monitor on the advice of my doctor, and it's been creeping up as I expected it to, but yesterday for the 2nd time it spiked up enough to raise a real alarm, so I decided "now" rather than "maybe after the holidays."

Today the doctor put me on a base level drug. This is the first time in my life I've had a drug that I will have to take every day forever (or one of its cousins). It was inevitable given my family history (my mom's BP is frightening), and blood pressure control meds at the level I'm likely to need for quite a while to come are cheap and straightforward, so I'm not all that bummed really. Beats destroying my kidneys.

Oh yeah, and I just ordered my first pair of bifocals.

Pass the Geritol.
