Lots of leftovers from yesterday sitting around at work. I didn't partake yesterday since I don't observe Lent anyway so I didn't think that would be fair, but now it's guilt free.

So, I saw somewhere a few days ago that Opera has gone "free" so I figured I'd plug it in and try it.
Not terribly impressed. Actually, not impressed at all.
It was fairly slow on my machine compared to Firefox, even though I have a dozen or so of plugins installed on Firefox and Opera was running bare.

It was a little better at some technical aspects of rendering HTML, but on the other hand, the default fonts and how it decided to render some tables and such looked...well, clumsy and sort of out of the 90s.
Some Javascript stuff, particularly in Google Calendar, didn't work at all (popup time selection was one I recall). Surprising considering how Google makes a pretty huge effort to be cross-browser compatible.

The plug-in equivalent, I guess called widgets or gadgets or something like that, was completely off the mark. My favorite Firefox plugin is ForecastFox. I tried a few Opera weather things, and they were horrible. They have to be invoked to look at them, and then they pop up OVER the content I'm looking at, and stay there until I use the mouse to find and click the X. Horrible. ForecastFox sits in the status bar, gives me everything I usually want at a glance, gives me more info if I hover over it (and goes away when I move away) and navigates to a full screen if I click on it.

Somebody's not getting something here. Maybe I'm not "getting" the whole Opera paradigm. Or maybe Opera doesn't get it. Or maybe Opera just serves a different audience; some people just like different things. If so, at this point I'd say that audience is pretty small and not likely to grow much. Maybe that's OK with them; not everyone's in to world domination.
