_Night Watch_ by Pratchett
While trying to arrest a psychotic killer, Vimes and the killer get hurled back 30 years in time, where he relives a painful uprising in the city where friends in the watch get killed. He tries to do the right thing while trying to maintain the integrity of history, along with some time police monks. Vimes' son is born at the end of this book.

I went and gave blood today at the Chelsea drive. There were a couple of new nurses there. All the regular nurses are used to seeing me come in wearing bike gear, and they don't hassle me about riding home afterwards (it's only 5 miles).

The interview nurse was new though, and she kept saying "I really don't recommend this." I had to insist that it really wasn't going to be a problem. And it wasn't; never has been.

Unfortunately I didn't realize that they had the double-red machine there until they got past the interview, and at that point apparently they can't go back and change it. The double-red machine takes out two units of blood but puts some of the fluid and some saline solution back into you so you donate two units but you actually get less dehydrated, and it affects people less. It takes a little more time but it means you get two sessions done at once, and since most of the time is in the interview and waiting, it's well worth it.
