Injured coworker
May. 8th, 2008 10:17 amA friend at work who has been getting really excited about riding to work injured herself this morning. And it was in the most ignoble of ways; she had a clip-out failure. This happens to nearly everyone; you forget you're clipped in, or you don't clip out quite right, and your feet don't come out of the pedals, and you just fall over. She hasn't been using cleats for long, but this wasn't her first ride either. But I think it takes quite a while before you totally don't have to think about it to clip out.
For whatever reason she got sold racing shoes with Look style cleats, which are harder to get out of. I use SPDs myself, and I keep them set fairly light so I clip out easily. I think she would have been better off with mountain shoes and SPDs. For one thing, it's really hard to walk in racing shoes and Look cleats, whereas with mountain shoes and SPDs I could actually wear the shoes all day if I wanted to, and I can go into stores without walking like an accident victim.
Unfortunately she appears to have torn something in her knee. It doesn't hurt to bend but it won't take any weight. She's at the ER now, probably getting an MRI. It could be just a sprain, so fingers crossed.
Of course the security folks at work follow procedure so we wound up with two ambulances and 3 paramedics at the front desk for someone with a sprained knee. She wound up being taken to hospital in a private car though.
This will probably put her off the bike for the summer. It's too bad; she only lives 1.5 miles from work. Heck, she's walked it before. But she's probably going to be driving for a while.
