_The Last Continent_ by Pratchett
Rincewind is on XXX continent (Australia look-alike) having been sent there at the end of the previous Rincewind novel by the staff screwing up the calculations on teleport. Time works weird on XXX - his arrival is said to have caused things to have been screwed up in the distant past, and he is tasked with setting things right, a fate which he doesn't seem able to avoid.

The librarian is sick and the staff want to know his name so they can "cure" him - they think Rincewind might be the only one who knows it. They set out to find him but find themselves first marooned on a deserted island with an inept god in charge, then later on XXX, but thousands of years in the past.

A few months ago my sister-in-law gave me an old laptop. She said "it's really old so you can do whatever you want with it." Honestly it's a pretty decent machine; 1.8 GHz and a 30G hard drive. We used it here for a while but I don't have that much use for laptops, so I sent it to my brother who actually was in desperate need of a new machine, and even this 4-year-old laptop was many steps up from what he had (he was using a 400 MHz AMD with 64 megs of RAM, Windows 98 and a 4GB hard drive).

The one thing I had been using it for was to take notes at church meetings. Last Wednesday, we had the first meeting since I mailed it off. So I did the logical thing; I picked up my TRS-80 model 100, put some fresh AAs in it and headed off. I did get one person amused by it, but hey, it works. Taking notes is what it was made for, it has a really decent keyboard and it will run for many hours on 4 AAs.

I did have to go find the null modem cable to get the data back on the PC though.
