Yay, construction sorta half done!
Aug. 18th, 2008 12:17 pmThe major detour on my route opened up on Friday. The bridge is still under construction (MUCH larger project) and is westbound-only, but I've decided that since I'm hitting it at 7AM and there's almost no traffic, I sneak across it the wrong way (100 feet) rather than take the 1.2 mile detour (which includes my choice of a road with really bad pavement except in the center 10 feet, or an extra .5 miles and a full mile of gravel).
I normally advocate bicycles following all laws, but I just can't resist going the wrong way 100 feet with no traffic in sight to avoid that detour. Still, if there's any traffic around, I go ahead and take the detour.
My commute is back down from 47 minutes to the 36 it should be in the summer. Plus I'm not riding on Wylie, which is gravel and due to the detour traffic on it some sections have gotten badly washboarded; I was almost surprised every day to have not broken a spoke on that road.
Once over the bridge I found that the back road that I usually take to bypass the main street is completely torn up for a couple of blocks and is covered with loose crushed limestone which is like riding in sand. So I had to walk that. I hadn't known about it because I haven't been through Dexter proper for weeks. Until they get that fixed up I'll just stay on the main road, though that adds two traffic lights and more pedestrian traffic (though not at 7AM).
Still, should be pretty much clear sailing on the way home. 34:10 is the time to beat for the 10.9 mile run...
