Wanted: CROP walk sponsors
Sep. 14th, 2008 12:53 pmI'm going to be participating in the CROP walk for the first time on October 5.
CROP walk is a hunger fundraising and awareness event. 25% of proceeds are used locally, the remainder are distributed worldwide via Church World Service, which is an interfaith group. Here is CWS's FAQ. They're a very efficient charity as these things go, you can check them out there if you're into that.
They're very much a bootstrap organization. While they do provide disaster relief (they're very active with hurricane relief in the US) they also do things like buying pumps and providing hygene training in villages, providing startup loans to allow women to jump-start small businesses, and buying chicks and chicken coops to families to give them an ongoing reliable source of eggs, protein and income.
The focus this year is on providing good sources of potable water to poor communities. Women in these communities are particularly affected because they're the ones who wind up spending all their time walking long distances to bring potable water and firewood back home to prepare meals. Providing a closer source of good water will allow them to do other things with their time which might allow them to bootstrap themselves into a better life.
My donation page is here for anyone that wants to consider supporting this cause.
