Typical Microsoft product. Version 1.4 worked well, 2.0 has issues that they don't appear to be interested in fixing.

I tried syncing my ebooks directory to an external hard drive with 2.0. It took it 3 hours to GET READY to start doing something. Apparently from googling around, this is not unusual on the first round.

Then I had some trouble (bad ACLs due to the original backup being made on a different machine) and had to start over again. It was going to take another 3 hours so I took a hint from one conversation I read, and found a copy of version 1.4 of SyncToy.

It works great. Seems to have all the same stuff, and instead of 3 hours, it took about 15 seconds to start working and appears to be running just as fast, if not faster.

I'm keeping a copy of 1.4 around. MS isn't distributing it anymore, I found it on a download hosting site. I wouldn't be surprised if MS has the old version pulled eventually.

On another note, I really wish there were a "no security" filesystem with decent capabilities. NTFS with no security would be good. Trying to manage ACLs across multiple Windows systems is just irritating, and it's not like the security is getting you anything if someone has physical access to the drive. They can plug it in to their machine and take ownership anyway.

FAT32 would work, but I don't think I trust it that much to set it up on a 1TB (or more) single partition.
