More storage stuff
Jun. 1st, 2009 08:09 amSince at least one of the 1TB drives will be used for off-site storage, I decided to play with partition encryption with TrueCrypt. I've only done system drive encryption before (and of course container).
I think I prefer partition encryption to a container that takes up the whole partition. The container gets confusing because you have the partition mounted in one drive letter, then you mount the container in another. Since the drive is useless without mounting the encrypted area anyway, it's just pointless to have an unencrypted area at all.
I did mess up and format it FAT32, then the sync failed on a few files that were > 4GB, but "convert.exe" took care of that this morning in a few minutes. The sync is finishing now.
TrueCrypt looks like it will encrypt an existing partition in real-time, I assume the same way that it did the system partition on my laptop. I may do that later.
There's a starling loose in our building at work. Who knows how it got in, this is not a terribly accessible building for birds; it'd have to have gotten in a door and flown up stairways. Actually there's some chance it got in around the roofline; we've had some trouble with birds nesting in the corners.
