The new computer (the quad core machine w/4GB RAM and Windows 7) sleeps at the same power level as when it's off - 1 watt on the power meter.
The somewhat expensive ($100, in the past I've used $60 ones) mainboard said that low power consumption was among its benefits, and I spent a touch more for a beefy but "green" power supply, so I guess that all adds up.
So it's sleep mode for me - it's nice having the system up and running in just a few seconds. Of course, I shut down or at least save from any app with unsaved data first, since the power going out would toast anything in memory.
I used to just let the machine run, but I really can't justify it since I'm only using it for maybe 4 or 5 hours a day, most days. It burns 145 watts when on, plus the monitor, whatever that draws.
