That was the biggest load of pure literary masturbation that I think I have ever read. It's an interesting concept and I'm OK with just waving hands and saying "OK, this happened, don't worry about the mechanism, we're just going to roll with it." But the overblown rhetoric was just so over the top it was almost laughable.
I was pretty fed up with it by about 1/3 of the way through, but I just let it roll for the next couple of days, hoping it would get better. I mean, after all, Jim Baen edited it and published a number of volumes, and more are still coming out. Couldn't be all bad, right? It did get a little better actually, by the end it was merely dreadful.
Ugh. Excuse me, I have to delete the rest of the series from my player.
