Oath of Gold by Elizabeth Moon

Excellent. Had a few moments reminiscent of Arrows of the Queen, but with more ass kicking.

On to the new one, Oath of Fealty.

Not a ton done, between church, obligatory birthday lazying around and thunderstorms and general drizzle keeping me under roofs, but I did get an hour or two of weeding done, and tried to rescue a few suffering rose plants from incursion of sod - cleared back about 12" radius around them and fed and mulched them. Did some random tree and shrub trimming and killed a few hundred tent caterpillars on 3 different trees via the satisfying method of pulling out my knife and bisecting them all - thus not applying insecticide.

Finished digging and cleaning the quarter of the east bed that was to be totally replanted, and got the dahlia tubers as well as a bag of gladiola bulbs in there.

Also on Saturday, I discovered an evergreen shrub of some kind that has been trying to grow in the easement apparently for several years, but has been kept short by the lawn mower. It's sort of a Tim Allen Bonsai. I decided anything that got mowed down every week or two and still was bound and determined to live should get a chance, so I moved it to a new spot, and also sowed a strip of wildflower seeds next to it and under a small tree nearby. There were actually two of these evergreens out there, the 2nd will be moved soon as well.

During the breaks, watched the first episode of a new BBC show called "The Landscape Man" - where the projects are less the average backyard project and more on the scale of terraforming - the first one was about 5 acres and involved several years work including much power digger work by an older couple with a dream. The next one looks to be very large scale indeed.
