DVD media recommendations change
Aug. 29th, 2010 01:35 pmFor many years I've been recommending exclusively Taiyo Yuden media from SuperMediaStore.
However, that retailer has refused to return my emails regarding a warranty replacement on a USB memory stick - they returned the first one saying "we can't find your invoice on our system so we can't cover it." I replied with a full copy of my receipt, and they won't return my emails now.
So I went up to Newegg and looked at what was available. I went with a couple hundred DVD+R media (I'm switching to +R instead of -R (*)) from Verbatim. They're $20 shipped per 100 which is about 40% less than I've been paying for the TY media. I'm halfway through the first 100 so far, doing 100% verification reads after writing at 16X and they're performing like champs.
I've never had significant problems with Verbatim in the past and they seem to be one of the few big names that actually make their own discs, or at least make them under contract with a factory that they have some say in.
I have used Verbatim in the past and have not noticed any degradation over time. Other reviewers on newegg say the same. So FWIW, that's my current recommendation on DVD media.
(*) I've read a couple of sources that say that the +R format is more reliable than -R - it contains more error correction and the laser tracking method is improved and allows for much more variation and wobble while still being able to track. So I'm going to switch and see how it goes.
