I've been wanting some way to tag scanned/digital photos for about 20 years. Facebook works great but I can't exactly upload 40,000 photos to Facebook.

Turns out Picasa can do it, and it's actually pretty decent at recognizing people once you identify them once.

One one hand this is fantastic. On the other, it means a ton of work has now fallen into my lap, though primarily what I want to do is to index the photos of people from old genealogical photos before there's nobody left alive that knows who these people are.

EDIT: maybe a half ton. Picasa really has an incredibly efficient interface, and it identifies people correctly a bunch of the time so it's one click per mugshot to confirm identity.
