I've been looking at a travel superzoom lens for at least 6 months, and more casually for over a year. There are a lot of choices out there from Canon, Sigma and Tamron. I wound up ordering the Canon 18-200 today, instead of the Sigma 18-250 or the Tamron 18-270 (2 models). The reviews that I read indicated that the Canon was enough sharper than the Sigma or the older Tamron that it made up for the extra zoom range; you could crop down a max zoom photo from the Canon and still wind up with a sharper image than the other two zoomed in closer.
Tamron just introduced a new 18-270 PZD with a piezo micromotor focus and a complete optics redesign that is ridiculously small, yet apparently has pretty darned good optics. I was very tempted by this for the last day or so since I discovered that it was actually a completely different lens and sought out reviews. In the end it was a toss-up so I went with the lens with more history and that is more likely to hold value if I decide to sell it later. Also, though I know there have been massive improvements in superzooms in the last 5 years, 18-270 still seems just too much.
I'd also like a 10-22 but that's a lot of money for a much more specialized lens.
