Location sharing
Aug. 3rd, 2011 09:06 amGoogle+ location sharing is useless (for my purposes). There's no way to put in your current location (lat/lon or whatever); it just gives the address of your ISP. No, I'm not in Howell.
I guess they just assumed that people would only ever use location with a smart phone. Since I have zero interest in ever getting a smart phone, I will probably never use that feature.

No Musecon for me
Aug. 3rd, 2011 11:24 amI didn't prereg for Musecon since it would be ridiculous for me to think that I'd have a free weekend in August, and now that it's upon me, I realize that's always going to be true. As long as Musecon is first weekend in August, there's absolutely no way I'll ever make it. There are TWO events that weekend, one on Saturday and one on Sunday, that I pretty much have to make (and really enjoy them both), and they've both been running on those dates for at least 50 years. So I guess the answer to "are you going to Musecon" for me is probably always going to be "no." It's too bad because Duck to Windy is a long stretch, and my enthusiasm for the Houghton Berzerker isn't really great these days either.

I was unaware of the existance of Shapeways - where you send in your 3D designs and they print them in stainless steel. Very cool. Discovered via BoingBoing where a person designed and printed a replacement part for a baby stroller and got it printed for < $20, instead of the $250 the company wanted for a repair.
This makes a home 3D printer even more interesting, as a device for prototyping objects before having them printed in stainless steel.

Utterly broken uninstall app
Aug. 3rd, 2011 09:17 pmA few days ago I threw that little Edimax nano USB 802.11 wireless adapter into this machine. Since then I ran cable and it's hooked up wired now so I decided to uninstall the driver and app for the wireless.
The uninstall program ripped out all the routing for my wired ethernet adapter. I got it running again, but what a screw-up.
