Catching up on movies
Jan. 5th, 2014 04:54 pmPrior to December 2013, the most recent Star Trek movie that I'd seen was the really horrible The Undiscovered Country (1991).
In the last 3 weeks I've seen all the more recent ones using a combination of Netflix, bluray purchases and library check-outs. It's odd that some but not all movies in the franchise are available on Netflix and Amazon Streaming, even some by the same director and studio. I bought Into Darkness on bluray because it was on a Black Friday sale for $8 for the BD/DVD combo, which I couldn't pass up. I like having the physical disc because I like extras.
I'm also trying to get through all of the TV franchises. I'm finishing up the first season of DS9 now, I'd already seen most of them but not all. The first season of any of the modern franchises is shaky IMO, DS9 no exception. I'll get up to speed on it though.
I also feel like I should watch some non-SF series; I've been recommended Community and Breaking Bad. I watched about the first 20 minutes of the first episode of community and couldn't stand to watch any more. It may be just that a lot of shows take a while to get started. Breaking Bad, there are too many people saying it's really good TV for me to think it's not, but I really am not comfortable with conflict and realistic violence, so I'm a bit nervous to start on it even though it's on Netflix and I can take it at whatever pace I want.
