Very much enjoyed this book.
I see a lot of criticism of the book on GoodReads, much of it from hikers. Here's a clue: this book isn't about hiking. It's about self-discovery. The author really got herself messed up and started the hike in a pretty bad place, but the summer walking the trail was the crucible she needed to get her life back together.
If you expect her to be a competent hiker, or for this book to tell you anything useful about hiking, you're in the wrong book. She says many times that she had no idea what she was doing, but she still made it. The people who would get through what she did are 1 in 1000 at best."
