Date: 2009-10-19 03:17 pm (UTC)I wouldn't want to try that ratio in my current riding condition around any hills. (I still was having to get off and walk up the hills around the house the last time I had my bike out -- and its about time to try again now that the summer heat is mostly gone)

Date: 2009-10-19 03:24 pm (UTC)I don't think I'd want a fixie, for sure. I like to be able to coast, at least down hills. However, I would ride a single speed, it sounds kind of like fun though it would probably add a couple of minutes to my commute.
Personally if I build a new bike I'll probably use an internally geared hub. Shimano makes a nice 7 speed IGH.

3) Provided it hadn't destroyed my leg in that time.

Perhaps you'd be willing to take my Schwinn Typhoon... single speed men's bike, red, with a honkin' big basket. Dad bought it for me in 1984 when I got out of the Air Force, so I'd have transportation on Mackinac Island. I haven't been able to part with it since then. (Yeah, I have baggage...)"
Hey I used to have a red Typhoon, don't know whatever happened to it
:)
Mine didn't have a chain guard, I took it off when we were inventing mountain biking (of course, we didn't know we were at that time, we were just kids trail riding in the woods, much as we do today on our hand built full suspension mountain bikes
:p ) That would have been around 1971-73, the same time period Gary Fisher was riding old bomber bikes down Mt. Tam
