Which is part of why I don't think touchpanel controls in cars are a good idea. something you get no tactile feedback from as a control in a car is probably too distracting

It's worse than that. It's a perceptual thing. People who are looking at the road do not see cyclists.

Sorry that's a later link. An insurance company eye-tracking experiments showed that 22% of the time drivers do not see cyclists that are in plain view and they're looking at the road.
