Did some brake work on the Taurus frontend last night, and got Kate out to watch. She's much more interested since she's become a big fan of Monster Garage. Front discs are a good intro, very simple, a 30 minute job (stretched to an hour because of explaining and going slow). Truck drums would turn a newbie RIGHT off. When she starts driving she can start doing maintenance herself, with me helping.

Tom came out also, but at his age he's mainly good for running around and making useless noises. I'll get him later.

So I got 110,000 miles on the OEM pads on the front of that thing. The rears I changed at 60K, didn't really need to but I had them off anyway to check them. So now I'm out of sync, bummer. However, from the looks of the front rotors I'll need to change them out in another couple of years; they're vented and are starting to rust significantly inside, so they'll start vibrating soon. I'll probably just drop on new pads all around then anyway.

I'm pretty amazed with how well rotors last these days. I remember they used to always get all grooved up and need to be turned/replaced every 30K or so. Either the rotors, pads, or both have gotten way better. At 110K the rotors are still dead flat and no noticable wear (though I didn't mic them).

I also showed Kate how wobbly the CV joints are getting, so we have a both-sides axle changeout to look forward to in a year or two. They've been making nose on turns for a couple of years. Not a REALLY big job, but probably 3 hours or so (2.5 on the first side, .5 on the other once I figure out what I'm doing).

The rear main is also leaking a bit, but after checking out the procedure, I decided to just add a quart every K or so. It's a one-piece, so the transmission has to be dropped to put on a new one. I'd rather buy 10 quarts of oil a year than either do that or pay someone to do it (not a cheap job). It doesn't leak when the car isn't moving, so it's not staining the driveway.

All these cute little quirks are so endearing, aren't they :-)
