Card reader
Mar. 7th, 2008 07:59 pmAnother installment in the "John Digs Cheap Electronics" story.
I buy cheapo electronics toys occasionally, and a lot of them are junk, but enough are good to make it about a wash, so when I find one that works well I let y'all know.

$6.99 (free shipping) SD card reader, supports SDHC. They had an email special last week and I actually got TWO of them for $6.99, with free shipping. I just couldn't pass that up.
Finally, one of the cheap card reader manufacturers put out a reader that A) seems to actually work reliably and B) supports SDHC
With this thing, you can buy SD cards and use them as either cards for your camera/player/etc or as a thumb drive.
I threw in one of the $6.99 2GB SD cards that I got from Woot yesterday, had TrueCrypt create a 1GB volume on it, and got 5MB/sec write speed. Not lightning fast but about average for a cheap thumb drive, and for all I know it's as fast as that SD card can write; I don't have any hyper-speed SDs since even the cheapest cards I can get can keep up with my camera.
I also put in my 8G card and wrote a bunch of stuff to it to confirm that worked, and that it would write for a long time without fritzing out like many do.
When I bought my 8G card I got a Sandisk reader about this size; at the time it was the only thing I could find that supported SDHC. It cost $25 and actually wasn't very reliable; I had trouble getting XP to mount it, and it disconnected sometimes.
I like to keep a reader like this right in my camera pouch along with spare batteries and card, in case I want to move pictures while at work or someone's house or something. I will keep the spare 2GB card right in it, and it'll also be effectively a 2GB thumb drive for emergencies.
