I very much enjoyed the first Uplift War trilogy when I read it many years ago. I haven't really kept up on new publications for the last 15 years or so, but I noticed last week that there was a 2nd trilogy published quite a while back.

I read about 1/4 way into the first book (Brightness Reef) and it's very slow going. This evening I gave up and started on the first book of Elizabeth Moon's Heris Serrano series, and that's good stuff; I'm going through that easily 2 or 3 times faster than I did on Brightness Reef.

[Edit]To clarify, BR was slow going because I don't really know what the hell is going on. It felt like I was jumping in halfway through a story. It was clear what the plot was but I wasn't latching on to the characters or even the races at all.

So, the 2nd uplift trilogy; does it pick up? I didn't like the first book of Discworld either, but you folks said it got better, I stuck with it, and I quite enjoyed the rest of the series. If the 2nd trilogy is worthwhile, let me know and I'll stick it out.

I could be remembering the first trilogy. Part of the problem is I became much less fond of Brin after I met him.
