I figured we were about there already, but I just confirmed:

Equivalent-quality CD-Rs cost more than DVD-Rs.

I assume this is simply due to economies of scale; I am sure they make a hell of a lot more DVDs than CDs.

I could buy really shitty CDs for about half the price, but I've been down that road; once in the past I simply threw away about 150 blank CDs; they were a total waste of low-quality plastic; just-burned discs would be bad. I've gotten to the point where I only buy Taiyo Yuden discs. If the data isn't worth putting it on good media, it's probably not worth having at all.

I don't go through many CDs these days; a 100 pack lasts me a couple of years. They only get used for OS install CDs, I used one last week to burn a firmware update disc for our DVD player (to fix an HDMI audio problem) or the occasional audio CD. I just got an email that the church needs 25 audio discs copied for VBS in a few weeks, so I had to order more.

SATA drives don't fit in kids' stereos to play music, and I haven't figured out how to use one to update the firmware in my DVD player.
