johnridley: (Calvin vs Bike)

New wheel arrived, picked up the 7 speed cassette and spacer from the Dexter shop, put the two together (had a little trouble, the spacer interfered with the clearance of the tiny bolts that hold the cassette together, so those came out and the cogs and spacers went on loose). Torqued to 30 ft/pnds as recommended. Drilled the rim out for schrader valve.

I also had trouble when putting the tire on - the first tube gave way at the valve stem. I think it was coincidence; I had cleaned out the valve hole and sanded it. I burnished it some more anyway just to be safe. The next tube also leaked around the valve but it turned out to be a coincidental hole in the tube about 1/2" from the stem. The third one (a brand new tube) held fine.

This should be a pretty tough wheel, it's a Deore LX hub and a Salsa cross rim. It's all shiny and stuff!

Also, I'm installing a completely new set of cables this weekend.

Odometer: 15095. About 70 miles was done on J's bike.

Oh, and I found a cycling-related userpic that I can at least live with for now.

Stress relieve and retrue the wheel, unless you know the wheel was built by someone clueful. It's much easier to do that at home, rather than on the side of the road.

The wheel came from Quality Wheel House. Reviews online indicate that they do a damn good job; several LBS wrenches say that wheels from them can go on as received and last quite a long time. The wheel looks to me like it was already stress relieved. At this point I'm going to assume that they probably did a better job than I can.

Where did you get the square drive lockring tool?

It was in a tool set I bought from Nashbar.

Oh, huh. That'd be a lot more useful than the Park one I have which just has a round center. Then again, I guess it's not really a load bearing part.

I suppose you could put a socket on the torque wrench and put the tool in THAT. It wouldn't throw the reading off enough to matter.
