I took some photos outside today using the HF100 HD camcorder in still mode. It's a 3.1 megapixel camera in that mode.

The full size original images are posted on this album page for those interested.

Not too bad, certainly miles above what I've used in camcorders before, which is a pretty low bar to clear. Mainly the problems are that the images are fairly noisy, and the bokeh is really weird looking, which is quite evident even in the downsized image above. There's significant purple fringing as well, which is glaringly apparent in the other image in the album. However, as essentially a bonus on the video camera, it's perfectly acceptable. A friend once said his camcorder's still mode was so bad that he'd rather he didn't even have it. This would certainly work for me if I didn't have a real still camera with me or if I didn't want to carry two cameras.

Can you say "oversaturation"? I knew you could.

Yeah, I should try turning that down. There is a setting for it. Although honestly, it does pretty much look like that. Those flowers are quite bright.

I think turning down the sharpening might help too. It looks like an overdone unsharp mask.
