GWB must have had his fingers crossed when he pledged to "preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the United States".
Hmm, actually, that is the exact phrase. I just noticed that it doesn't say anything about OBEYING the constitution. Interesting. Maybe crossed fingers aren't strictly necessary.

I have thought that he has meant that he's defending the piece of paper (it really is well protected at the National Archives) rather than following what it says on that piece of paper.

Yes, that was my thought as well. I thought as I was formulating that post, "I could swear to preserve, protect, and defend this piece of granite I'm holding in my hand, but I'm not going to do what it tells me to do."

I've seen that, but the last time I dug into it the closest thing to a 'reliable' report that it really happened was from Drudge. I'm very dubious.
