1040 electronic filing started up yesterday, and all seemed well.

Got a high priority email this morning, ELF has gone sideways everywhere, can I please fix it, they're taking a zillion calls in the support center.

I couldn't connect to the VPN. I emailled back saying so, and I might have to drive in to fix it.

Then they found the problem. Someone forgot to renew our domain.

Boned.

The on-site network team is mostly gone through attrition, we're not allowed to hire replacements as people leave, since the mothership wants us to not have anyone but cable pullers around anymore, and wants us to use their centralized support over in Eagan, MN.

I bet we transferred control of domains over to Eagan recently. I just bet. We didn't have these problems when our own people were in control. Maybe someone forgot to tell them that yes, we still need that legacy domain, even though we're supposed to have been sucked up into our new parent company's domain as a subset.

Heh. Legacy domains.

No such thing, especially if you are dealing with money or personal information. You keep them forever.

Huh. I just found that I can't get VPN'd into work today either.

Well, since our VPN issue is tied to our domain going away, I'm sure it's unrelated. Unless you work for Thomson Tax & Accounting also.

Oh, no... This is... Well... I don't do corporate support, so I'm not sure what it is. It's just keeping me from looking up the payday schedule for February, so I guess it's not that important.

Well, if it's expired, can you purchase it yourself and then repoint the DNS servers? Then point out how many thousands of dollars in work you've just saved them....

I could, but it was easier to call the helpdesk lead. She called her people and they got it straightened out in about 10 minutes. Now we just need to wait for the DNS change to propagate. I've hand-tweaked my hosts file so I can get into the VPN again.
