Argh, computer shuffle irritation
Sep. 4th, 2007 08:39 amWe're still recovering from the power surge, and probably will be for at least another week.
I set up the Dell 531 that replaced the family PC. I had to search a bit for XP drivers, but as the alternative was to run Vista, it was worth the effort. All seems well now.
After reviewing the damage, I decided that we would only come out at right around our insurance's deductible, so I opted to just forget it. I cancelled the 2nd Dell that I'd ordered and started deciding how to best patch together the systems we need.
I realized that I probably had a working Athlon 1800 CPU, and the mainboard I got from Kings claimed to support it, so I dropped that CPU into that mainboard. Bad idea. Now that mainboard is toast, or both CPUs are. Not sure which.
Anyway, for a PVR box, we're now truly hobbling on a 500 MHz lunchbox PC with a fried ethernet slot and normal PCI cards wedged into half-height slots and the case hanging open.
I decided the best course would be to put a new mainboard in the old family PC; it's got an Athlon 64 and RAM; a new mainboard should put it right back in business again. These are ordered and will hopefully be in by the weekend.
Meanwhile, our programming data source is gone as of 9/1, and we're coasting on the 14 day buffer of data. There's a new data source available but it requires updating the software. My attempt at this was not successful. I'll try again when the new mainboard comes in. It's possible there may even be a new version of KnoppMyth available so I can just install that.
