Steal This Entry
Feb. 29th, 2008 12:26 pmRead (well, largely skimmed) Steal This Book by Abbie Hoffman.
Largely outdated, but nonetheless interesting and often entertaining. An interesting snapshot of the time and that scene.
About 2/3 of the book is outdated and useless, but the remaining 1/3 is still good fun reading. The self-defense (particularly knife fighting) section and a lot of the first-aid sections are wrong, flat out, but probably not bad given knowledge at the time or what you could get across in a book. But anyone relying on this book for that is already in a lot of trouble I suppose. Other areas are probably just as bad but I don't know enough to know it.
Politics aside, it's got some fascinating stuff in it and is worth a skim. There's a new version which is about ready for press that's been worked on at www.stealthiswiki.org. There's a PDF there of the alpha print version for free download. I just opened it and flicked to a few random pages, and it's clear they've done a WHOLE LOT of work on it. Should be an interesting read.
