Nice ride today
Apr. 18th, 2008 03:32 pmToday was our company's annual "kick off" meeting. They hold it shortly after April 15 every year. I skipped last year because it was on April 16, and honestly, I don't generally plan to get up before noon on the morning after April 15.
Anyway, as I did for the first time 2 years ago, I rode my bike over there. It's held at Laurel Manor in Livonia, which is a 33 mile one way trip, so about 107 kilometers round trip. It was a very lovely day for a bike ride. Unfortunately it's almost entirely on North Territorial Road, and that road quite honestly sucks. It's got some rough patches that are quite horrid, but at least they're just on the edges so you can move out to the left and hit fairly good pavement.
It really should have been a problem except I didn't have nearly enough water with me. On my 11 mile commute I don't carry water at all, it's not really a problem. But by mile 25 on the way back, I'd drained the water bottle and was really wishing I had another couple of them. When I got home I downed a couple of 12 ounce glasses of water in about a minute, went and took a shower, downed a glass of orange juice, a glass of milk, had a bowl of cereal with another glass of milk, then a 16 ounce bottle of Mt Dew while watching some TV, and I'm still a little thirsty. I was getting a bit run down on the last 5 miles but I think I would have been completely OK had I carried enough water.
Problem is I left at 5:30 and my lights battery takes up one bottle cage. I've been thinking about putting a 3rd cage on top of the rear rack for the battery. For the record, I was 2:03 getting there, 2:14 on the way back (headwind). I could have left an hour later but the traffic probably would have been worse then.
The big news at the meeting of course is that yesterday our parent company merged with Reuters, so I'm now john.ridley@thomsonreuters.com - what a mouthful. Thankfully thomson.com still works. For that matter, creativesolutions.com still works. I was thinking while taking a shower that I should register ThomsonWithNoP.com (people are always typing "thompson.com" so people always say it like that, "thomson with no p") but there's a non-zero chance of lack of amusement if management finds out about it, and it's not that good of a joke anyway.
