No user servicable parts
Aug. 25th, 2009 09:18 pmI dropped my HD camcorder on Sunday, and it won't go into record mode.
Since I'm sure Canon won't cover it under warranty anyway with an obvious big impact mark on the front, I pulled the cover(s) off this evening. I believe that it's clearly a problem with the mode switch. Guess what, the mode switch is heat welded shut.
I'm going to sleep on it, but I'll probably wind up pushing an x-acto knife into it and popping the welds. Worst case, I can't get it back together again and I have to buy the part (assuming that they'll sell it to me - I did find a number for the Canon US parts depot). It's two switch assemblies, one the mode switch, the other the zoom and shutter button, heat welded to a ribbon cable so it's one assembly of two parts dangling from the cable. I figure it'll probably cost about $60, since it probably SHOULD cost about $20. But I wouldn't be surprised to pay $90 either.
And who knows, I may be able to glue or plastic weld it shut again.
In any case, once I pop it open, I should be able to short the appropriate connectors and see if it goes into record mode. If it does, case closed. So to speak.
