johnridley: (Calvin vs bike)
This is a late post, but this is the first time I've ridden the bike this year, and only the second time since October. Hopefully I'll be back on the bike a bit more now, since I've achieved the short-term goal that was keeping me off the bike. There's another goal looming but it's vague at this point and I don't think I need to work 12 hour days 5 days a week to achieve it.

Riding with studded tires after months off the bike: ugh. In low gears most of the way, legs definitely feeling it. I don't think I'll be doing more than 2 days a week for a while.

Anyway, bike stats:

Jan 1 2011: 23085 miles
Jan 2 2010: 19823 miles
Net: 3262 miles

Several hundred miles under my normal yearly average, but with no riding the last 2 months, not unexpected. I won't be doing quite the mileage in the future either, since I've decided it's really not worth it to ride on winter days when there's been a bunch of snowfall in the last few days and the roads/shoulders are not clear.

So, it having been about 10 years since I was actually in the market for a new telescope, and I haven't subscribed to any of the major astronomy magazines for about 6 years, I've been re-familiarizing myself with the market.

New router

Got an Asus WL-520GU, and got Tomato installed on it. Yay, it's nice to have a powerful router again. The Rosewill was OK, it did basic duty, but was missing a number of features that I'd grown quite accustomed to. I'd intended to install Tomato on the Rosewill, and I think it's possible to do but I never was able to get it running.

Installing a new firmware on the Asus is a little more of a PITA than it strictly needs to be; you have to use TFTP. They give you a small utility to do it with, but seriously, why? It's nice to have the TFTP option though, because it means you probably can't totally brick the thing; I imagine the TFTP boot loader is non-volatile, or at least in an area not typically overwritten during reflash.

Even with the meds, my BP had crept up to borderline again. Riding the bike today was a bit of an experiment in this regard as well.

My BP right now is 115/76, lower than it's been in 2 weeks.
