Ugh, dirty
Apr. 24th, 2011 06:38 pmI don't normally take a lot of interest in keeping my vehicles clean, but man, my bike is absolutely filthy. I don't care that much about the body, but the rear brakes were nearly immobile and the chain was not bending. I just cleaned the chain a week ago and the brakes about 2 months ago. That damned gravel road just puts grit everywhere.
I think it might be nice to get the bike clean, but it has so much dirt and grime and grease caked so hard onto it in every possible nook and cranny that I think it would probably take me a full day with a bunch of solvent and scrub brushes to get it anything like clean.
So I just get the mechanical stuff clean and lubricated, and to heck with what it looks like. I also cleaned the grease off the reflectors.
So today, I removed and cleaned the chain, relubed it with Boeshield, lubed the derailleur, removed, cleaned and lubed the rear brakes, took the pads out of the front (disc) brakes and blasted them clean with brake cleaner, scrubbed the grime out of the pads. I have new wheels for the rear derailleur at the Dexter bike shop, I'll pick those up on Tuesday when they're open again, though I think I'll just keep them until I decide to go with a new chain, which may not even be this year. Unless it stops shifting correctly.
