johnridley: (antikythera)
Our internet went out Tuesday. Tuesday night Charter's automated system said there was a generalized outage in the area. Last night it was still out and they weren't saying that anymore. Surprisingly, after determining there was a problem here, they scheduled a tech for 8AM today. I didn't expect that kind of speed.

Anyway, the guy got here and just started shaking his head about how horribly our connection was set up, and how they broke at least a couple of rules to set it up that way. The 450 foot run from the box down the street is way too far and the entry point into the house is wrong too, they just did as little work as possible. So right now we're running on 500 feet of RG-6 just lying on the ground, and he's submitting a work order for a horizontal boring crew to come in and hook us up to the spot across the street (which wasn't here when we built the house).

As a bonus, since he moved the demarc to a new location in the storeroom, I cut a piece of plywood to fit on a shelf there, actually screwed all the equipment to it, re-routed all the cables, installed a switch at the old location and ran a single cat5 there from the router. Things look a lot nicer. They'll look even better when I staple all the wire that's currently draped all over the basement back to the ceiling.
