johnridley: (Kick in the butt)

Athens resident and University graduate Fred Birchmore
has done more in one lifetime than most people could even imagine.

He was the first man to ride a bicycle around the world and was the first known foreigner to come out of Afghanistan alive since Marco Polo.

He's done everything from camping out under 2,000-year-old olive trees in the Garden of Gethsemane to sleeping on a boat in the Sea of Galilee to living in a cave on Capri.

a. I just had to look up Gethsemane to find its location. I may or not have been there, but I have been to G'Hennon (the original "Hell"), which is nearby.

b. "First known foreigner to come out of Afghanistan alive since Marco Polo?" What? What about all the British and Russians who were there in the 19th century?

c. The entire story is one large link.

I knew about C but didn't mind, I changed it a bit now.

I'm sure there's more than a tad of exaggeration involved here, but hey, the guy's got great stories, and at 93 looks pretty good for a man of 70.
