A quick scan of the source code seems to indicate that they're involved in some kind of drag and drop functionality.

Huh. I've never seen it before. I am now on my main machine, and don't see that. I bet the laptop has a newer version though. Or maybe something turned on that's not here.

It's something new since 3.13.

It appears to light up for fields that exist in the selected entry.
