Heirs of Empire by David Weber

That was pretty damn good. The first two books were OK, this one had a heck of a lot better suspense. Heck, it had three suspenseful threads running at once, and great pacing for all of them.

The society on the planet they discover is a bit borrowed from Off Armageddon Reef, but only a little. I don't mind.

I believe the borrowing is going the other direction, but yes.

Ah, so it is. This was written in 1996, OAR in 2007. Thanks for that. It makes more sense, OAR is much more thought out, though the world in this one is totally fine for the different situation it's intended to address.

One of the rumors I heard was that, having written HoE, he wanted to go back and re-visit the basic world idea. Which led to OAR.
