This killdeer was not at all happy that we were daring to come within 20 feet of her clutch of four eggs while looking at trees at the nursery.

Did she do that feigning broken wing thing?

No, I've seen it before but she has been living with people walking around her nest for long enough that I suppose she's got kind of an attitude. She just turned to face us, put her wings out like you see to appear bigger (and probably to shield the eggs from view) and if any of us took a step closer, she'd go DEEEE! at us. I went DEEEE! right back at her, and she wasn't impressed.

The only reason I got this side-on shot is that at this point Tom was in the next row of trees over and she had gotten used to me, and was watching Tom who was now approaching.

What a lovely shot. There was some mystery-bird on my deck the other day -- Round and fuzzy-grey I only saw it hopping, and it didn't seem to like the fall-off between the deck and the step -- but I've not seen any baby-birds yet this season, so I'm guessing it was an adult. It disappeared when I was out-of-sight getting the camera.
