I hadn't used the Gimp (open source image manipulation software) for several years, because it just didn't replace Photoshop and I had several copies of Photoshop Elements lying around. Well, I got a new machine at work a few weeks ago, and didn't have a PSE CD at work, needed to do some quick editing, so I downloaded a copy of Gimp.

The current windows version of Gimp is actually pretty decent. In any case, a lot less confusing than the last one I used. It still is nowhere near a photoshop replacement, but it's a competent image editor for probably what the majority of people need.

I don't recall if you've mentioned it before or not, but what about Paint.NET? It's not really in the same class as a good photo editor, but for most basic cropping and annotations, it's quite useful.

I've got a strong bend against The GIMP, but I think I'll give it another go. The UI drove me up a wall before... Non-MDI done terribly, terribly wrong.
