WD 1.5 terabyte "green" hard drives are $99 at Newegg today (on their daily deal). Even better, buy one with a USB SATA docking station for $120 (the docking station is normally $40 by itself). So we're down to 6.6 cents per gigabyte; DVD blanks are 6.9 cents per gigabyte.

I remember when hard drives got down to $1 per MEGABYTE. And it wasn't too long ago that a terabyte was more space than we could imagine putting on one computer.

Damnit. You're tempting me. 2x 1.5TB disks could wholly replace all my current storage needs, and provide plenty of headroom.

I'm even considering a software mirror.

Well, you *are* kind of an old geezer! Heck, I bet you remember 1-speed bikes, too. (har, har).

Uh, will that $99 1.5TB drive work with a Real Computer like mine? ;-)

Sure, hardware-wise, the only difference between your Real Computer and everyone elses is that yours cost more.

I don't really know what model of Real Computer you have though, so I don't know for sure that there's room inside for the drive, or power and data cables to plug it in to.

This is a SATA drive so it should be compatible with anything made in the last few years, but if you have something like an iMac or Mini, there's no room inside for it AFAIK.

Yeah, I realized that, once I looked at the specs. In fact I do have a Mini ... and Honey [livejournal.com profile] forestweather has an iBook. Right now I have a 500GB LaCie drive that I'm using as the backup for my machine, but we don't have a backup for Kim's. Of course, those storage amounts are crazy big for her needs, but the price! the price! Meh. I'll probably just get another little Maxtor external drive the next time I go to Best Buy.

Well, combined with the docking station for $120, it would certainly work on any machine, plugging in to a USB port.

I have an essentially identical docking station that I use daily, but I'm using 1T and 1.5T drives as removable media. It works really well for me.
