I'm undecided about Windows 7. Specifically, about whether I'm going to keep using it, or switch back to XP. There's nothing about it that I like better than XP, but there's also nothing about it that really bothers me all that much either, so I don't know if I want to put up with the lost day it would take to back up and move back to XP.

What I want out of an operating system is that it be as invisible to me as possible and let me run my apps. XP does that very well. Windows 7 is OK too, but they've done a few things to detract from that. The worst is Windows Explorer. It's been made so "friendly" that it no longer allows me to quickly navigate my system and I can't force it to have the look I want; no matter how often I try to force "all folders" to have detail view, for instance, it keeps flipping to icon view. Icon view is useless. I NEVER want it.

I think I probably will be installing XP again, I just don't know if it'll be today or next week.

Honestly, Windows 2000 is still fine for me, except it can't handle more than 2 CPUs, and some software I own requires at least XP.

I have 4 HDs for the old VAIO FE21 laptop I use for playing about; Ubuntu, XP, Win7 and 2000.

I must follow your link for getting rid of the timewasting toys on 7 and see how I feel about it then.

It is reasonably fast, even on a 1.66GHz/1GB laptop, so may keep that on 7 for compatibility testing.

I seem to have been accumulating laptops recently, the VGN-FE21H, a Toshiba 17" P300 monster, a slick 2GHz/2GBVAIO SZ4 with what I think is a flakey mousepad, a VAIO VX195VP that has an occasional faint vertical red line in the centre of the screen and an old Dell 15" thing.

I've still got my baby VAIO TR5MP but also 3 more of them not working fully, one with a dead mobo, two with cracked screens.

I suppose I could swap around bits, but it's a rather low priority job....

What I probably *will* do, however, is put Win7 on the least desirable (ie poor battery, heavy) laptop, the 195, and keep Ubuntu on the FE21.

Ideally, I ought to get the SZ4 fixed, but again, so long as I have *something* available that works when I need it, I can't really summon up the enthusiasm.
