The owner of our TKD studio has decided to get certified to instruct Krav Maga so hopefully in a few months we'll be able to have classes in that. As both Tom and I are approaching black belt with TKD, it will be fun to have another direction to explore (not that either of us will be what I'd call "expert" at TKD for years yet).

Date: 2009-11-06 02:00 pm (UTC)This morning I dreamt that I got a license to carry concealed weapons, specifically knives--daggers strapped in sheaths to the insides of both forearms. Tell me where (i.e., what it would be called) I could be trained to fight strictly defensively like that. ; )

Date: 2009-11-06 03:14 pm (UTC)One thing they drill into you is that if someone comes after you with a knife, and you can't run away, is to NOT show any mercy. That guy intends to kill you. No matter if they weight 100 pounds or 300, you play as dirty as you can, and you don't stop pounding, throwing rocks, biting, kicking, poking their eyes, elbowing them in the throat or breaking their arms until that knife has been wrested away from them and thrown as far as you can throw it. THEN you run away. Later, call the cops.
So personally, I wouldn't try to bring a knife to bear on someone. It just escalates the situation. I think you either need to be content with hand-to-hand, or start carrying. Standard advice when facing a gun is "give them whatever the hell they want, unless you're pretty sure they're going to kill you anyway."
Sounds like good advice!
