I grew up in west Michigan and I would NOT have expected this level of awesomeness in a high school there. Maybe Muskegon is a stand-out community. I would expect it in Chelsea, but certainly not where I grew up.

High School students want more rights for their transgender peer

The students at this high school want Oak Reed (born Oakleigh) to be homecoming king. The school says he's registered as a female so he can't be.

That was an amazing story. I was surprised though that the school superintendent did not seem to be more familiar with how the school could help the kid. There are a ton of resources out there now for transgender folks; it's not like the old days.

Then again, even though GVSU has a [student] center for LGBT concerns, and a very vocal, connected director, most buildings on campus still have gender-based bathrooms. I wish the architects would get with the program and simply include one-off bathrooms for either gender. They could be labeled: toilet.
